Holiday Potpourri & Dogs

oy-veyUh oh, another “fragrance” humans like may be deadly to dogs but then I’m not surprised. Much of what MAY smell good to humans can be dangerous, deadly, toxic, etc. to us animals – AND even YOU humans! We haven’t been able confirm this yet (we did check Snopes.com but nothing yet) but we thought it would be far better to make you aware of the possibility of this holiday potpourri than be sorry later that we hadn’t shared it and saved some lives. I just don’t get WHY a dog would WANT to eat that stuff though, WOOF! I’m REALLY glad my humans diffuse essential oils by Young Living instead of putting all this unnatural and possibly poisonous stuff in our house when they want good and healing smells for us.

Here is the email that we received:
I have just been made aware of deadly potpourri easily purchased at WalMart and other outlets…it is from India and contains strychnine. I know of at least 2 dogs who have just died from eating very small quantities…they suffered seizures and respiratory arrest. There is a lab in England that has case studies relating to the strychnine content. Especially during the holidays, many households use potpourri. Just to be safe, I suggest that all of it is either discarded or kept strictly out of reach of our dogs and cats.
