Natural Flea & Tick Repellant
By Doc Kim on Nov 20, 2006 in Flea, Tick, Mosquito, Mite, Parasite Prevention
Rrrrrufff having fleas or ticks, but I don’t worry about that bepaws I’m raw fed, and Mom uses Young Living essential oils and a special spray she mixes up to repell those nasty things. They’re still scary if you don’t know how to keep them away naturally bepaws the so-called “prevention” meds can be almost as bad over time as the actual pests themselves, WOOF! So I’m rrreally glad my Mom uses these natural repellents and feeds me raw meaty bones, YIPPEE! Here is what she shared with a friend on a natural animal group she belongs to:

I’m sure I’m singing to the choir here but the reason any animal has a problem with ticks is because their blood is attractive to the ticks, fleas, mosquitoes, mites, etc. The only reason that would be so is because the blood is sweet rather than the bitter blood of a healthy dog with a healthy immune system. The crux goes to feeding of course. If the dog is on kibble there’s the problem right there. I use the natural “aids” in addition to correcting the problem at the cause which is a weakened immune system through improper feeding.
So if your friend wants to eliminate the ticks permanently, I’d do two things:
1. Switch the diet to a raw diet
2. You can mix up some of our essential oils *(we only EVER use Young Living Essential Oils therapeutic grade, pure organic) into a dark amber or cobalt blue spray bottle (I use glass bottles rather than plastic because the plastic leeches chemicals we don’t want mixing with the oils) then mix with some purified water and spritz the dog before going out. This acts like a natural pesticide OR use them “neat” (undiluted) to act as a repellant.
Here are some of the oils that are good for getting those fleas and ticks gone:
Ticks:
lavender
peppermint (however while this is considered a “hot” oil, it does cool the body in winter so it’s not a great idea in really cold climates)
lemongrass
sage
thyme
Fleas:
peppermint
lemongrass
spearmint
lavender
As you can see some of the same oils get rid of the same pests so I usually mix lavender, peppermint and lemongrass together. I also use a mixture with the Bible oils that has worked fantastic (the buggers don’t even come near my dog):
Myrrh
cassia
cedarwood
hyssop
I combine these together as they work really well in synergy together. I don’t use that many drops and I put them in a 4 oz bottle (maybe 5 drops of each) with purified water and spritz Shadrach daily before our walk/run in the park during the warm months. Right now we don’t appear to have any bug problems with the colder weather. The Bible oils mixture works well at repelling fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. They may land on the dog but they won’t stay there and they’ll even appear “drunk” if they do lol.
Have a tail waggin’ day!
